Hatfield and McCoy Feud

Was it a genetic disease (Nature) or their environment (Nuture) that led to the feud?

Here is the story on the Hatfields and McCoys

Visiting Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory

Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) hosts geoscientists that research all around the world.  Dr. Sidney Hemming is studying the massive floods that covered the Northwestern United States over 12,000 years ago.  She is a geochemist, looking at the elements in sediments to see how they traveled.  What questions do you have about these floods?
Penguino's cousin was in front of the
mass spectrometer!

Here is her notebook!

From Beach to Mountains

Our friends have been traveling.  Baldy was at the beach last week, fondly looking northeast towards Scofield.   This weekend, Puffy went up to Stratton Mountain in Vermont, looking through the trees and stepping on the snow.  There is a lot to be said about working outside.  There are many science careers that let you spend time traveling and working in many different environments.

Maybe I should measure the tree growth in this area. What would that show me?
Is there more cloud cover in Florida? Ask a meteorologist.
Do the shells indicate a change in climate?

What can I measure for climate records?

Touring Kennedy Space Center

There are over 5,000 people here waiting to attend the launch.  It is now a 40% chance for a go, hopefully the clouds will clear.
Here are some pictures from today.  AstroBear is standing in front of a model of the Hubble.  I am getting suited up for space!  I will try to upload more pictures as we await the launch today

Kennedy Space Center

We are waiting to hear Bill Nye the Science Guy speak.  Puffy did not come today, but AstroBear showed up to see the Atlantis shuttle exhibit.  Pictures will be uploaded soon.

We Made It To Kennedy Space Center!

We arrived late Friday night.  Spent Saturday at Kennedy Space Center, listening to the science briefings.   The launch is scheduled for Monday, but it has been cloudy here.  Hope it clears up!
The first picture has Puffy standing on top of a scale model of the Sojourner Mars Lander.  It was much smaller than Curiosity!   The second picture has Puffy looking down on a small model of the MAVEN.  Remember, it is the size of a school bus.

Practicing Pulse and AED's

Ms. Clinkenbeard brought in the AED trainers to show us how to use the AED's and perform CPR.  We also practiced taking our pulse, and used stethoscopes to listen to our heartbeat.
